COSCO ships to sail solar

Australian energy firm Solar Sailor has signed an agreement with China's biggest shipping firm COSCO to fit solar-powered sails on two of its ships in 2010. COSCO Bulk Carrier will fit the aluminium solar-powered sails, measuring 30 metres long and covered with photovolatic panels, to a tanker ship and a bulker ship. The sails can harness the wind to cut fuel costs by 20-40% when the vessel is travelling at 18 knots, and use the sun to meet 5% of a ship's energy needs, according to Solar Sailor. Once fitted, the sails can pay for themselves in fuel savings within four years, said Dr Robert Dane, chief executive of Solar Sailor. This technology can be used for cruise ships as well. more >>>>

Carnival: Financial turmoil causing consumers to 'shut down'

Miami
Executives at industry giant Carnival Corp. say the economic meltdown of the past six weeks has caused a significant drop in bookings, and they're hunking down for a tough year ahead. "The consumer (has) shut down," Carnival chairman and CEO Micky Arison told Wall Street analysts this morning in a hastily-arranged conference call. "We've heard this from all segments of the economy, and we've heard it globally. Like other cruise companies, Carnival suddenly is dealing not just with falling bookings but a tightening of credit markets that has made it more difficult to borrow money to pay for new ships. Cruise ships must be ordered years in advance, and the 87-ship company is locked into contracts with shipyards to buy 17 additional ships between 2009 and 2012 -- five of which will arrive over the next year.
