AmaWaterways has taken another important step in expanding its operations on the Magdalena River in Colombia with the ceremonial christening of its new river cruise ship, AmaMelodia.
The ceremony took place in Barranquilla and marks the continuation of expansion in a region where the company has already played a pioneering role.
Following the successful launch of the AmaMagdalena, the second ship further strengthens the company’s presence and enables more immersive travel experiences with a strong focus on cultural authenticity and local engagement.
Numerous partners attended the christening event, including ProColombia, representatives from politics and local communities, as well as regional leaders. A traditional blessing by an indigenous Mamo honored the cultural significance of the river. This was followed by speeches from the company’s founders, Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst, as well as the future captain and godmother of the ship, Elisabeth Mercado Herrera.
The AmaMelodia can accommodate up to 64 guests and was designed in collaboration with Colombian architect Camilo Restrepo. The design blends local culture and nature with the brand’s customary standard of comfort.
On the “Magic of Colombia” and “Wonders of Colombia” itineraries, guests gain access to previously hard-to-reach destinations along the Magdalena River. These include Mompox, known for its colonial architecture and jewelry craftsmanship, as well as San Basilio de Palenque, the first free city in the Americas.
The trips include guided shore excursions such as wildlife viewing in the La Mojana wetlands or cultural encounters in Santa Bárbara de Pinto. On board, guests have access to a sun deck with a pool, a fitness area, a spa, and restaurants serving regionally inspired cuisine. Pre- and post-cruise programs in Medellín and Cartagena are also offered.Travel and Transportation
CEO Catherine Powell emphasized that Colombia plays a central role in the company’s future development and enables new, culturally immersive travel formats.
The appointment of Elisabeth Mercado Herrera sends a strong message:
She is the first woman to captain a river cruise ship on the Magdalena River—an important step toward diversity and the promotion of local talent in the industry.
With the AmaMelodia, AmaWaterways underscores its long-term vision of establishing the Magdalena River as a sustainable and culturally significant travel destination on the international stage.
