c: AmaWaterways

AmaMagdalena, offers two seven-night itineraries, ‘Magic of The Colombia’ and ‘Wonders of Colombia’.

AmaWaterways has launched the first luxury river cruise ship which has accomodations for 60 Guests

AmaMagdalena will offer two seven-night itineraries – ‘Magic of Colombia’ and ‘Wonders of Colombia’ – which will sail between Cartagena and Barranquilla. The itineraries will offer passengers the opportunity to enjoy numerous cultural experiences such as the Barranquilla Carnival; a guided heritage tour and jazz performance in the Unesco-designated city Mompox; and a musical and historical exploration of Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. AmaWaterways will also offer pre- and post-cruise packages in Medellín, Cartagena and Panama City.

“Our expansion into Colombia represents a new chapter for AmaWaterways and for the world of river cruising,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways. “We are proud to be the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena River, a region that until now has been largely inaccessible. AmaMagdalena opens the door to a culturally rich destination, and we’ve worked closely with local communities to ensure our presence benefits everyone involved – from our guests to the people who call this river home.”

AmaMagdalena was custom-designed in collaboration with Colombian craftspeople and woodwork specialists from Cartagena-based Ocean Projects in order to bring the “heart and soul” of the region onboard, according to AmaWaterways. The project was led by architect and interior designer Camilo Restrepo, while the interiors of the staterooms were built by Marianna Schlegel Donado of Casa Schlegel Donado from Barranquilla.

maWaterways is scheduled to launch a second ship, AmaMelodia, on the Magdalena River in summer 2025, further expanding the company’s presence in Colombia, which has been supported by ProColombia and local stakeholders.

“The launch of AmaWaterways operations in Colombia marks a new chapter for our tourism,” said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia. “It is not only a sign of trust in our country but also an opportunity to show the world why Colombia is the country of beauty. The Magdalena River will become a showcase of our traditions, biodiversity, and hospitality.”
