Disney Cruise Line to complete fleet expansion early as cruises boost Disney earnings

The Walt Disney Company has confirmed that Disney Cruise Line will complete the first phase of its ambitious fleet expansion earlier than originally planned, following another quarter of strong financial performance driven by its Experiences division.

 The announcement came alongside Disney's fiscal third-quarter 2026 earnings, which highlighted cruises as one of the company's fastest-growing businesses.

During the earnings presentation, Disney executives said the initial fleet expansion program will be completed in early 2029 instead of the previously expected end of 2029. The acceleration follows the successful launch of the Disney Adventure in Singapore earlier this year and the entry into service of the Disney Destiny, while the Disney Believe remains on schedule for delivery in late 2027. The fifth Wish-class vessel, destined for Japan and operated by Oriental Land Company under license from Disney, is now expected in early 2029.

The earlier completion reflects the remarkable momentum behind Disney Cruise Line, which has become an increasingly important contributor to Disney's Experiences segment. The company reported quarterly revenue of $25.25 billion, up seven percent year-over-year, while operating income from Experiences rose 10 percent to $2.8 billion. Disney specifically cited strong demand for its cruise vacations, supported by the first full quarter of operations of the Disney Destiny and continued success of the Singapore-based Disney Adventure.

Disney's cruise expansion is part of the company's broader strategy to invest approximately $60 billion in its Experiences business over the coming decade.

 Cruise ships have become one of the highest-return investments within the portfolio, generating premium pricing and exceptionally high occupancy levels. According to industry estimates, Disney's cruise fleet generated around $3 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year, with additional capacity expected to substantially increase that figure as more ships enter service. 

Disney Cruise Line's expansion also underscores the enduring partnership between the company and Germany's MEYER WERFT in Papenburg. Disney has been one of the shipyard's most important and loyal customers for more than 15 years. Since the delivery of the Disney Dream in 2010 and the Disney Fantasy in 2012, MEYER WERFT has built every purpose-designed Disney cruise ship, including the Disney Wish (2022), Disney Treasure (2024) and Disney Destiny (2025). The Disney Believe, scheduled for delivery in 2027, is currently under construction in Papenburg, while four additional newbuilds have already been ordered from the German shipyard for delivery between 2027 and 2031, securing one of the largest cruise shipbuilding programs in MEYER WERFT's history

By early 2029, Disney Cruise Line will have expanded from just five ships in 2024 to ten vessels operating worldwide, including year-round deployments in North America, Europe and Asia. 

The fleet will continue growing beyond that point, with three entirely new ship designs scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031, ultimately bringing the Disney-operated fleet to twelve ships, alongside the separately operated Japanese vessel.

Disney executives emphasized that demand continues to exceed expectations despite the rapid increase in capacity. The company believes its combination of family entertainment, premium onboard experiences and expansion into fast-growing Asian markets will support continued growth for years to come.

For the cruise industry, Disney's latest financial results reinforce a wider trend: cruise vacations remain one of the strongest-performing sectors within global leisure travel, with operators continuing to report robust bookings and sustained consumer demand despite economic uncertainty.
