MEYER WERFT launches H2MASS project to develop hydrogen energy system for cruise ships

MEYER WERFT has joined a new research initiative aimed at advancing the use of hydrogen in the cruise industry. 

Together with Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg, and Carnival Maritime GmbH, the shipbuilder launched the H2MASS (Hydrogen for Cruise Shipping) project on May 1.

The project focuses on developing a metal hydride hydrogen storage system that can provide a climate-friendly energy supply for large passenger ships during port stays. By replacing conventional onboard power generation while alongside, the technology is expected to significantly reduce emissions in ports.

The consortium plans to develop an integrated 4 MW hydrogen energy system capable of meeting the demanding technical, safety, and regulatory requirements of the maritime industry. The project aims to demonstrate that hydrogen storage can become a practical solution for future cruise ship energy systems.

As part of the initiative, the partners will build and test a demonstrator under realistic operating conditions. In parallel, a digital twin will be created to simulate, optimize, and scale the technology for future ship applications.

H2MASS represents an important step towards the wider adoption of hydrogen in shipping. While the initial focus is on zero-emission port operations, the technologies developed during the project could eventually support hydrogen-powered energy systems for vessels at sea.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BWE), with coordination provided by Projektträger Jülich (PtJ).
