Meyer Werft presents “Vision”: a fully electric cruise ship with up to 95% fewer emissions

All-electric cruise ship as a model for the future
At Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami , MEYER WERFT presented “Vision”, a concept for the world’s first fully battery-electric cruise ship over 80,000 GT.
The study shows how existing technologies can be used to make the cruise industry significantly more sustainable and to actively promote decarbonization.
According to the company, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 95 percent compared to conventional ships. In doing so, the shipyard is not only addressing long-term climate goals, but is also consciously focusing on solutions that can be implemented in the short term.
Concrete project with market-oriented technology
The "Vision" project is designed as a 275-meter-long cruise ship for approximately 1,856 passengers and reaches a gross tonnage of about 82,000 GT. At its core is a large-scale battery system from the Norwegian company Corvus Energy , which is already used in numerous hybrid and fully electric ships.
Those in charge emphasize that the technology is already available. With a timely order, a corresponding ship could be delivered as early as 2031, according to current estimates. This clearly distinguishes the concept from long-term visions of the future and positions it as a realistic option for shipping companies .
Areas of application and infrastructure in focus
The planned battery capacity will allow large portions of typical European cruise routes to be operated entirely electrically, such as routes in the Mediterranean. The necessary charging infrastructure is developing in parallel: by 2030, around 100 ports in Europe are expected to be equipped accordingly.
For longer distances, such as transatlantic crossings, the concept is designed to be flexible. In such cases, additional generators could be integrated, allowing for hybrid operation. This increases the range of applications and improves the economic attractiveness for operators.
New design and increased comfort on board
Besides the propulsion system, "Vision" also brings fundamental changes to the ship's design. The elimination of conventional exhaust systems and the funnel creates new open spaces, particularly on the outer decks. This allows the sun deck to be completely redesigned, offering unobstructed views without any technical structures.
Furthermore, the ship is designed as an all-weather vessel. Spacious, glazed areas and an indoor water park allow for use regardless of the weather. At the same time, the electric propulsion system significantly reduces noise and vibrations on board, noticeably increasing passenger comfort.
