National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions Launches First European River Expeditions

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has entered a new chapter in its history by bringing its expedition concept to Europe’s rivers for the first time. 

The company launched its first European river expeditions in 2026 aboard the newly built 120-guest Connect, expanding its portfolio beyond the ocean and remote expedition destinations to the cultural heart of Europe.

The move represents a significant expansion for the expedition specialist, which has spent more than five decades exploring waterways including the Amazon, the Nile and the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Europe, however, had never previously been part of the company’s river expedition program.

First European voyages focus on the Rhine

The inaugural European program features two eight-day itineraries. The “Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights” voyage follows the Rhine through Germany and France, while “Holland and Belgium: Medieval History and Scenic Waterways” explores the waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Rhine itinerary combines historic cities, vineyards, castles and culinary experiences. Among the highlights are the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visits to Mainz, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Colmar, as well as private tastings and exclusive cultural encounters.

One of the more unusual experiences is a private reception at Rheinstein Castle. The itinerary also includes a private visit to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s former home in Frankfurt and an opportunity to meet university students in Heidelberg.

The Holland and Belgium itinerary is designed around the region’s art, history and spring landscapes. Guests can visit Keukenhof during tulip season, with more than seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, and experience after-hours visits to museums including the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Mauritshuis.

Connect brings the expedition concept to the river

The voyages are operated aboard Connect, a new 120-guest river ship constructed in 2025 and chartered from Transcend Cruises. The vessel was designed with the smaller-scale expedition concept in mind and features wrap-around windows, spacious cabins, several dining venues and a two-level Forum designed for lectures, presentations and workshops.

Unlike conventional European river cruises, the program places considerable emphasis on expedition expertise. Each voyage is accompanied by a veteran Expedition Leader, Field Staff and at least one National Geographic Expert. Private tours, specialist-led experiences and exclusive access are intended to give the itineraries a more immersive character.

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions describes the concept as a way of viewing familiar European destinations from a different perspective. The company's established expedition philosophy is being transferred from remote wilderness destinations to historic cities, cultural sites and European landscapes.

European river program to expand

The European river project is not limited to the inaugural Rhine season. In 2027, Evolve, the sister ship of Connect, is scheduled to join the program. The two ships will subsequently expand the offering towards the Danube, with Evolve also introducing festive-season voyages focused on European Christmas markets and traditions.

The European expansion therefore marks more than a one-off experiment for National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions. It establishes river cruising as another important element of the company's expedition portfolio and gives the brand access to a market traditionally dominated by established European river cruise operators.

With Connect and Evolve, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is attempting to combine the familiarity of European river cruising with its own emphasis on expert-led exploration, small groups and exclusive experiences.
