STENA LINE: sustainable future -Onshore power supply inaugurated in Port of Oslo

Stena Line is the first ferry company to connect to the onshore power supply connection in the Port of Oslo. Stena Saga will now be connecting to the electricity grid during calls into port.

This is an important step in Stena Line’s dedicated sustainability work, with one of the focus areas being to reduce emissions.

Stena Line has been working with onshore power supply connections since 1989 and is a pioneer within this area. With Stena Saga, 14 of Stena Lines 38 vessels can now connect to green electricity when in port.

“The completion of yet another onshore power supply connection in the Port of Oslo is an important milestone in our efforts to reduce emissions and we are now closing in on our target of connecting 25 % of our terminals in 2020. Many of our vessels call at locations close to cities which makes it especially important to be able to shut down engines when docked”, says Erik Lewenhaupt, Head of Sustainability, Brand and Communication at Stena Line.

Oslo is awarded the European Green Capital 2019 and the onshore power supply connection is expected to result in a saving of just over 1 400 tonnes of fuel every year which equals to the CO2 emissions of 1 300 cars on a yearly basis.

“We have a really close and good cooperation with the Port of Oslo and we are delighted that we have our onshore power supply up and running. We are of course also glad that we by this can support the city of Oslo in their aim to reduce CO2 emissions in the city and the port”, says Johan Edelman, Stena Lines Trade Director for Region Norway.

The onshore power supply unit was inaugurated Tuesday the 8thof January 2019.

Stena Line is one of Europe's leading ferry companies with 38 vessels and 21 routes in Northern Europe. Stena Line is an important part of the European logistics network and develops new intermodal freight solutions by combining transport by rail, road and sea.

Stena Line also plays an important role for tourism in Europe with its extensive passenger operations. The company is family-owned, was founded in 1962 and is headquartered in Gothenburg. Stena Line is part of the Stena AB Group, which has about 15 000 employees and an annual turnover of around 36,5 billion SEK.
