German Retailer Lidl starts own Shippingline, buys one and charters three Containerships

c: Tailwind

LIDL Shippingline registered under the Name Tailwind Shipping Line

After the announcement of Lidl's entry into shipping, new details of the company are now becoming known.

According to analysts from industry service Alphaliner, the discounter will start operating its new carrier Tailwind Shipping Lines in the course of the year, initially with four container ships. The company secured three ships under charter agreements and Lidl bought a carrier.

The chartered ships are on the one hand the two sister ships "Wiking" (IMO 9708382) and "Jadrana" (IMO 9619385) built in 2016; they each have a slot capacity of 4957 TEU. The "Wiking" is owned by the shipping company Tamke from Jork; the “Jadrana” belongs to the Hamburg shipping company Peter Döhle Schifffahrt.

According to Alphaliner, the container ship bought by Lidl is the "Talassa" (IMO 9290787). The carrier, built in 2005, has the largest transport space of the four ships with a slot capacity of 5527 TEU. The box carrier registered in Portugal was also sold by Peter Döhle Schifffahrt.

According to Alphaliner, the current charter contracts of the four carriers will all expire by early summer. It is therefore likely that they will drive for the new Lidl carrier Tailwind Shipping Lines from this point in time.

The point in time is the earliest possible, as the objection period at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) against the use of the Tailwind Shipping Lines trademark does not end until June 14th.

The internationally active German discount company Lidl, based in Neckarsulm in Baden-Württemberg, operates around 11,200 branches in 32 countries and has recently also been active on the US market.

Due to the global supply chain crisis during the pandemic, many well-known retailers such as Ikea, Walmart and Home Depot chose to charter their own ships.
