The world’s first commercial RoRo sailing vessel, the Neoliner Origin, was launched at the RMK Marine shipyard in Turkey.

The ship, whose construction will begin in November 2023, will be built for the French shipping company Neoline.

It is a 136 m long and 24.2 m wide cargo ship with 3,000 m² of sail area and a pair of foldable, 76 m high carbon masts. The ship also has a loading capacity of 1,200 linear meters or 265 20-foot containers. The maximum loading weight of the sailing roro is 5,300 tons.

RMK Marine said the vessel will reduce fossil fuel consumption by over 80% and "use the power of wind as the primary propulsion force." As for greenhouse gas emissions, these can be reduced by up to 90%.

This unique vessel will enter service in the summer of 2025, with the first tests scheduled for spring. It will operate on a route between Saint-Nazaire and Baltimore, stopping in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and Halifax along the way.

Neoline's plan was to start commercial service with two demonstration vessels.

Neoline plans to offer a trip every two weeks with two ships. The ships will reach a speed of 11 knots and enable a crossing of the Atlantic in 8 days.

The crossing to Baltimore will take a further four days. The company has expressed interest from a number of French industrial groups, including the Renault Group, the Beneteau Group, the Manitou Group, Michelin, Jas Hennessy & Co, Clarins, Longchamp, Rémy Cointreau and La Fournée Dorée.
