LONDON CRUISE TERMINAL: Controversial Cruise Terminal Plan axed in favour of new housing
Controversial plans for the building of a cruise ship terminal in Greenwich, east London, were scrapped by the new owners of the site in favour of new housing.
In 2015, Morgan Stanley secured planning permission for the cruise terminal but in the face of rising opposition, much of it based on grounds of air pollution, the plan was withdrawn in November 2018.
Enderby Wharf site has been bought by the owner of Trocadero in Piccadilly and Odeon Leicester Square, Criterion Capital, which plans to bring forward a new plan for a housing development instead.
According to Criterion Capital chief executive Asif Aziz, although the cruise terminal had been a profitable proposition, he agreed with the local residents who had complained that it would cause significant environmental damage.
In conjunction with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and via an open and constructive conversation with residents and community groups, they should instead deliver "innovative low-cost housing for rental", designed for those who either cannot or do not want to buy, and "will be served by excellent public transport links including the Thames Clipper."
