VIDEO: Cruise ship Le Commandant Charcot meets Russian nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy near the North Pole

THE MEETING OF THE TWO SHIPS TOOK PLACE IN REMOTE ARCTIC WATERS NOT FAR FROM THE NORTH POLE.

A video created by passengers aboard the 50 Let Pobedy and shared on social media shows the two ships exchanging greetings and sailing side by side through thick sea ice.

Up to 450 people, including 270 passengers, are on board the brand new French cruise ship, and the tourists wave at the Russian ship as it breaks through the ice.

The distance between the two mighty ships is only a few tens of meters.

The Russian nuclear icebreaker is on its way to the North Pole as part of a student expedition. Shortly after encountering the tourist ship, it also encountered two other ships currently cruising in the area. According to  the ship operator Rosatom, the 50th Let Pobedy met with the Arctic research station Severny Polyus, as well as the research ship Akademik Tryoshnikov.

The latter ship had sailed all the way from St. Petersburg with  new crew and equipment for the drift station  , which is on a two-year expedition across the ice.
